Tin House The Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta In the late 1970s we lived in Sacramento. During that time I often wandered down the levee road along the Sacramento River through the river towns of Courtland, Locke, Walnut Grove, and Isleton. Many of the oldest buildings are clad in sheet metal. In the right light, their facades display lovely muted colors. |

These river towns fascinated me. They were built by the Chinese who settled in the area after constructing the Southern Pacific Railroad. Not permitted to own land, relegated to the backwaters, their services were much needed to build levees and reclaim the delta swamplands. Eventually, over 550,000 acres and some 55 man-made islands would be put in cultivation. |
