PRETTY DRESSES

Joan had firm notions about proper attire in public. She took pride in her own appearance and delight in that of her little girls. She designed their clothes, made sketches, cut patterns, sewed pretty dresses for them.

Through the years she made her own outfits, endlessly sketching ideas before buying fabric and going to her machine. This sketch was made only a month before her death. She often showed her sketches to me, asking my opinion. Here, to amuse me (and to reassure me) she added a humorous touch to "Baggy-eyed old beauty and the kid Balloon." She called them her "Funny Ladies."
