The Sacramento Deepwater Channel runs north-south a few miles west of the river. The channel, completed in 1963, made Sacramento, some 90 miles inland from the Golden Gate Bridge, a deep-water port.
It can be disconcerting to look out across the endless fields and at the far end, where the furrows funnel together, see a sea-going ship.
