My first “real” camera

In 1938 I’d saved enough to buy a 35mm Argus C3, a poor boy’s Leica. This was my first "real” camera: I could focus it with the aid of a range-finder and with the aid of guess work and good luck, I could set the aperture and shutter speed.

Using cheap odd-lot film purchased on Fulton Street in NYC, I set out to record my world. The photo above was taken at a Memorial Day parade in West Orange, New Jersey. (We used to call it Decoration Day.) I lived in Orange right next door. New York City was about 15 miles east along the Lackawanna Railroad.
