The St. Charles Streetcar: A respite for the leg weary.
The line was built in 1835! Still in operation, its circuit through the Garden District
takes about 80 minutes round trip. It’s the real thing, not a rubber–tired facsimile. The
cars date back to 1923-24.
A local gentleman corrected me when I called it a trolley. Trolleys have drag
mechanisms, he told me, like the San Francisco cable cars. I think he’s wrong about this
but he was a very nice man.
