Stretching east and west away from the river, the furrows go on forever, their length and geometric precision accentuated by the land's flatness. These days, some of the fields are leveled and graded by laser-guided blades. With water all around and an easy land, irrigation is simple. The rich peaty soil, formed through the centuries in the wetlands of California's Central Valley, makes the delta one of the most productive agricultural areas in the state.
