The pilots were mostly young men, many of them home from Viet Nam, working
as dusters as a way to retain their wings. I could think of them as “aviators,” a
term, archaic today, which once conveyed the aura of romance associated with their
profession. When producers of the Howard Hughes bio-film choose the title
“The Aviator,” they sought to resurrect that romance. |
